Planned Gifts Reflect a Love of TLC

Suzanne Newton’s interest in TLC sprang from her love of American Sign Language (ASL). Many years ago, after her military service, she found she was becoming hard of hearing. Suzanne’s thirst for knowledge about deafness and new skills for communication led her to many Massachusetts deaf organizations.

During a visit to the Boston Guild for the Hard-of-Hearing, where she was taking a lip-reading class, she saw two people communicating in ASL. She thought she would much rather learn how to do that than learn lip reading.

“In the beginning it wasn’t the beauty of the language that drew me, although now I am often struck by its power and grace. Perhaps it was the realization that speech is not the only way to converse. Here were two people communicating easily having completely bypassed my way of doing it. There was freedom in that… my horizons widened. I wanted to learn more about those who had adapted to life without sound.”

After that day, Suzanne took many courses in American Sign Language, which led her to TLC, where she took classes with faculty members Derm Keohane and Alice Kopas.

Suzanne was passionate about helping to make TLC a place where all deaf students can get a solid education, have a good experience and make a difference in this world.

Shortly before her 98th birthday, Suzanne Newton, passed away in Bedford, MA, on the first day of spring 2018.

Suzanne Newton donated generously to TLC during her years as a community member and volunteer, and also chose to include The Learning Center for the Deaf in her estate plans as a member of the David Schwab Memorial Heritage Society.

Upon her passing, it was requested in her obituary that gifts in her memory be made to TLC, and earlier this year in 2019, TLC was honored to receive a generous estate bequest to The Learning Center for the Deaf. It was her wish that half of her life insurance bequest be designated for general TLC needs, and the other half be used to support Walden School.

TLC would like to thank Suzanne Newton for her kindness and generosity. We are honored that she has thought to include TLC in her estate planning.

“The Learning Center for the Deaf is a place where a deaf child can find a language. There is no other place that provides what TLC provides. I truly enjoy watching young people reaching out to others, asking questions we all have using their special language.”  - Suzanne Newton
